PDF pages have physical dimensions
A PDF page records width and height in points, where 72 points equal one inch. Viewers may scale a page on screen, but printers, imposition systems and downstream document tools use the stored dimensions.
Changing the page size creates a new geometry for selected pages. It does not automatically improve image resolution or reduce file size.
A4 and Letter serve different regions
A4 measures 210 × 297 mm and is the common office standard across most countries. US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches and is widely used in the United States and Canada.
Their proportions differ enough to affect line wrapping, margins and edge content. Use the recipient or printer requirement rather than choosing by visual similarity.
| Size | Dimensions | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | International office documents |
| Letter | 8.5 × 11 in | US and Canadian office documents |
| Legal | 8.5 × 14 in | Long agreements and forms |
| Tabloid | 11 × 17 in | Large tables and spreads |
When custom dimensions are appropriate
Books, labels, portfolios, tickets and production artwork can require an exact trim size. Record whether supplied dimensions describe the trim, the full page including bleed, or the printable content area.
Enter custom dimensions in millimetres, inches or PDF points and verify the exported page size. Avoid estimating dimensions from a screenshot.
Handle mixed page sizes deliberately
A document may combine portrait letters, landscape tables and scanned receipts. Standardizing every page improves binding and predictable printing, but a large source can become difficult to read when contained on a smaller target.
Inspect detected source sizes, apply ranges when exceptions matter, and reopen the final PDF before distribution.
Put the workflow into practice
Add a PDF, inspect its detected dimensions, choose the target geometry and placement rules, then reopen the verified result before printing or distribution.

Clear answers before you merge
Is A4 the same as Letter?
No. A4 is narrower and taller; Letter is wider and shorter.
Does changing page size compress a PDF?
No. Page geometry and file-size compression are different operations.
Can one PDF contain mixed sizes?
Yes. Standardize all pages or target only selected ranges.
Which unit should I use?
Use the unit specified by the printer or production requirement.
