PDF Form Field Types Explained

Choosing the correct response depends on how each PDF field type stores and displays information. Similar-looking controls can behave very differently.

01

Text and multiline fields

Text fields usually capture short answers such as names, dates and identifiers. Multiline fields are intended for addresses, explanations and notes.

A field may limit length or permitted characters even when those constraints are not obvious visually. Review the saved appearance for clipping.

02

Checkboxes and radio groups

A checkbox represents an independent on-or-off value. Several checkboxes can be selected at the same time.

Radio buttons belong to a group and normally allow only one option. Selecting another choice replaces the previous selection.

04

Required fields need validation

A required flag indicates that the form author expects a response. It does not guarantee the answer is accurate or formatted correctly.

Validate required fields before export, then visually review the completed page.
